Why our  Travel Designers like it…

“As a Chilean-American, I carry immense pride for this Chilean company that has consistently exceeded my expectations in every aspect. Their unparalleled reliability as an air-cruise operator truly sets them apart in the industry. The experience aboard their Magellan Explorer vessels, which warmly welcome a maximum of just 76 passengers, feels incredibly personal and intimate. It's as if you're part of an exclusive community exploring the wonders of Antarctica together. For those who yearn for a voyage that's not just a trip but a heartfelt exploration, this is the quintessential choice.”

What we love about Antarctica21

  • They are the experts in air-cruise itineraries. In 2003, they revolutionized travel to Antarctica by introducing the Fly & Cruise model, replacing traditional sailing with flights. This innovative approach, known as the Antarctica Express Air-Cruise, has established them as the most seasoned, informed, and competent organization to facilitate aerial journeys to and from the White Continent. Their pioneering success is evidenced by the increasing number of imitators following in their footsteps – a testament to their leadership in the industry, though often unmatched in quality.

  • They are a boutique operator of small vessels, with their air-cruises carrying no more than 76 guests per trip, providing a very intimate experience where you can remember everyone’s name at the end of your voyage. This allows for fast and efficient landings and more time to explore.

  • Antarctica21 only has one dedicated flight per departure. That means the simplest possible logistics and the ability to take advantage of narrow weather windows in the changeable Antarctic environment. They also have flight priority at the Punta Arenas airport, which allows them to take advantage of the narrowest possible Antarctic flight window.

  • They have a stellar expedition team of experienced, dedicated professionals. They are true adventurers who are keen to sharing their passion and knowledge with the travelers. On such a small vessel, it really feels like home while traveling in complete comfort.

Our favorite vessels

Our favorite vessels of Antarctica21 are custom built exclusively for Antarctic air-cruises, such as the Antarctica21 Magellan Explorer, which offers seven categories of luxurious accommodations. Another vessel we highly favor is the Magellan Discoverer, known for its exceptional design and comfort.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • The Antarctic light between Punta Arenas, Chile and the TEniente Marsh airfield at King George Island in the South Shetland Islands takes approximately 2 hours. That is fast, considering that Antarctica is one of the most remote places in the world.

  • Most air-cruise itineraries use Punta Arenas, Chile as the Antarctic gateway. Some itineraires depart from or end in the port of Ushuaia, Argentina. Many international airlines land daily at Santiago’s International airport. From there, several airlines connect the capital of Chile and Punta Arenas, a 3.5 hour direct flight. From Punta Arenas, you can explore the Chilean patagonia, including Puerto Natales and Torres del Paine National Park.

  • There is no airport infrastructure or land transportation at King George Island. You will need to walk from the aircraft to the shore, where you will take a zodiac boat to board your expedition vessel. It is about a one mile walk and it takes approximately 20 minutes. The weather can vary, so you must be prepared with your Antarctic clothing and footwear. Your check luggage will be handled by the Antarctica 21 team and will be delivered directly from the aircraft to your cabin. Our team in Punta Arenas will provide all the details and our team in Antarctica will be with you every step of the way.

  • As we have seen, the air cruise operation is weather dependent. Disruptions to flight schedules can be caused by low clouds, fog, snow, ice and heavy wind conditions at King George Island. As of March 1, 2022, Antarctica 1 has operated 242 flight the following breakdown:

    - 188 operated on the scheduled day
    - 12 operated the day before the scheduled day
    - 30 operated with a one day delay
    - 9 operated with a 2 day delay
    - 2 operated with a three day delay
    - 1 operated with a four-day delay

Even though the odds of experiencing a delay are low, travelers must be prepared for the possibility.
