Highlights of Ecuador
Galápagos Islands
The Galápagos Islands are without question Ecuador’s most recognizable region. The volcanic archipelago boasts some of the world’s greatest biodiversity, prompting Charles Darwin to develop his transformative theory of evolution. While cruises were once nearly synonymous with the Galápagos, several islands like Santa Cruz and Isabela offer exceptional lodging providing a safari-like experience. A combination of land and sea arrangements is ideal to experience the best of the Galápagos, with activities such as snorkeling, kayaking, hiking and of course wildlife observation.
Quito, Highlands and Cloud Forest
One of the continent's smallest countries is packed with many of its biggest offerings. Ecuador is home to charming colonial cities with 17th century architectural wonders lining cobblestone streets. Quito is one of South America’s most charming colonial cities with captivating historical sites and an ever expanding culinary scene. Just outside the capital are beautiful haciendas in the highlands showcasing indigenous culture and fantastic outdoor activities. Equally important for naturalists (and more specifically birders) is a visit to the cloud forest, also just a few hour’s drive from Quito.
Cuenca, Guyaquil and Ecuador’s Coasts
Explore Ecuador’s sprawling coastline and find yourself in beaches like Playas or Salinas that draw some of the world’s most talented surfers. Move inland and climb the Andes to reach the enticing colonial city of Cuenca. Keep going and before you know it you’ll be in the country’s Amazon Rainforest. This bustling nation offers a unique blend of history, geography and culture.
A hub for visiting both the Galápagos Islands and Pacific Coast destinations, the port city of Guayaquil boasts a llively waterfront promenade and colorful hillside homes with eclectic cafes and art galleries in the Las Peñas neighborhood. Just a few hour’s drive from the city are enchanting haciendas nestled into nature and ideal for relaxing upon return from the Galápagos.
Magnificent rivers and lush nature trails wind through dense Amazon rainforests, where Quechua villages invite you to immerse in colorful indigenous culture. Travel Guide
Thanks to its smaller size, Ecuador is one of the few countries in the region that can well explored within one trip. As such, we generally recommend that travelers focus strictly on Ecuador for a single journey, particularly given the logistical constraints when flying to the Galápagos. With that said, neighboring Peru is easily combined with Ecuador, with a pairing of Galápagos and Machu Picchu and/or an Amazon River cruise. Direct flights are offered between Lima and Guayaquil or Quito. Most US carriers offer nonstop service to Quito or Guayaquil. Galápagos is accessible via Quito or Guayaquil with a short flight of 1-2 hours.
