Highlights of Tanzania

The Serengeti and Great Migration

Home to the great wildebeest migration, the Serengeti National Park is Tanzania's best known national park and certainly one of the most highly regarded on the African continent. The Big Five and beyond are permanently on display in the Serengeti with the migration making its way through the park throughout the majority of the year, allowing travelers to witness one of the most intense and majestic wildlife cycles in the world. In February alone more than 8,000 wildebeests are born each day!

Ngorongoro Crater, Tarangire and Lake Manyara

Other East African gems found in Tanzania include the Ngorongoro Crater, where wildlife can be seen amongst an ancient treasure and one of the largest calderas in the world. Nearby Manyara and Tarangire provide the perfect complements to complete this unbeatable safari circuit. Heading south, Tanzania’s wildlife becomes even wilder.

Southern Tanzania: Selous and Ruaha

Explore the lesser traveled Selous Game Reserve via boat safari where you’ll find elephants and other migrating species. Ruaha National Park is often called Giraffe Park and is the largest national park in the country. Less busy than Serengeti, Ruaha offers an authentic experience with a staggering number of plains game, most notably the giraffe, hence its nickname.

Beyond the Bush: Mount Kilimanjaro and Zanzibar

The more adventurous will encounter the climb of a lifetime to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest peak and the world’s second highest. Unwind from a Kili trek either on safari or on the white sand beaches of Zanzibar. The historic island, known for its spices and cerulean waters, sits just off the coast of the mainland, serving as a seamless final destination designed for rest and relaxation. From kitesurfing in Paje to fishing and village life in Nungwi and Matemwe to privacy and seclusion in Pongwe, each region of the island offers its own distinct appeal. While the entire island boasts exceptional aquatic life, Pemba might just be the crown jewel for snorkelers and divers.

Travel Guide

The proximity of Kenya makes it a natural pairing with Tanzania, particularly with a handful of charter flights operating between the Masai Mara and Serengeti as well as the possibility of road crossings. Tanzania can also be easily combined with nearby Rwanda or Uganda for a gorilla trek. Most European and Middle Eastern carriers operate direct flights to Tanzania, many with service into Mount Kilimanjaro (ideal for safari) or Zanzibar. Kenya Airways’ nonstop flight from New York is also incredibly helpful for arriving to the region.
