Walking safari at Kapamba, Bushcamp Company

Luxury Zambia Safari

Zambia is a lesser known name in safari, a curiosity that most certainly works in its favor. Considered the home of the walking safari, Zambia boasts Big Five wildlife throughout its wide array of ecosystems with far fewer crowds and lower price tags than many of its neighbors.

Highlights of Zambia

Walking Safari

South Luangwa National Park was widely considered to be one of Southern Africa’s best kept secrets and is quickly gaining international fame as a must-see for safari enthusiasts. It is here that Zambia became known for its walking safaris, with just a handful of camps sparsely populating the immense park bustling with diverse wildlife set between the Kapamba and Luangwa rivers. North Luangwa National Park provides an even more remote, off-the-beaten path experience with a shorter season limited only to the driest months. Nearby Bangweulu Swamps is a birders’ paradise and quickly gaining recognition for its reintroduction of buffalo (and soon possibly cheetah).

Victoria Falls

Zambia’s best known attraction is Victoria Falls, set upon the mighty Zambezi River that creates a natural border with neighboring Zimbabwe. The lodges in Livingstone and the surrounding areas are some of the most luxurious on either side of the Falls, often home to their own private game reserves with water-based game like elephant and buffalo and feline predators. Heading northeast along the river takes you to the Lower Zambezi, the ultimate destination for both classic safari and exhilarating canoe rides along hippos, crocs and elephants. Here one may encounter some of Southern Africa’s most prolific leopard sightings.

Big 5

For an equally off the beaten path immersion into nature, Western Zambia is not to be missed. Kafue National Park is enormous in size and very lightly trafficked, with some of the country’s most consistent Big Five spotting. Within Kafue is the renowned Busanga Plains, known for its prolific game viewing.

Travel Guide

The Victoria Falls border with Zimbabwe and Botswana allows for a seamless combination of Zambia with its neighbors. Both Livingstone and Lusaka, the country’s capital, offer direct flights from South Africa and other African capital cities such as Addis Ababa, Ethiopia and Nairobi, Kenya. Emirates Airlines operates a direct flight from Dubai to Lusaka, providing easy access into Zambia from North America and Europe.
