Highlights of Zimbabwe
Redefining Zimbabwe
Still reeling from a historical change in its political climate, Zimbabwe is making a push to compete with neighboring countries as a reigning safari hotspot, offering remarkable value by comparison. It welcomes travelers with a combination of warmth and grace perfectly complemented by diverse landscapes, including msasa trees, lush mountains, and rivers, and of course, the Big Five.
A collection of protected national parks cover 20% of the entire landscape, and showcase a diverse variety of wildlife. In addition to game reserves, Zimbabwe’s geography calls adventure travelers far and wide. Plains, lakes, and lush forest regions attract the most outdoorsy of tourists. Its shining star is undoubtedly Victoria Falls, the largest waterfall on the planet, which can be seen on foot or by air.
Victoria Falls
Perhaps Zimbabwe’s most widely recognizable destination is Victoria Falls, set upon the mighty Zambezi River which creates a natural border with neighboring Zambia. The Victoria Falls Hotel overlooks the Mosi-oa-Tunya, or the “smoke that thunders” in the local Lozi language. Several other lodges nearby have their own private game reserves with water-based game like elephant and buffalo and feline predators. Victoria Falls is the ideal destination for adventure lovers, with activities like swimming in the harrowing Devil’s Pool or ziplining. It’s also the perfect respite as you begin or end a thrilling safari elsewhere in the region.
Hwange, Mana Pools and Lake Kariba
Reached by either road or air from Vic Falls, Hwange National Park is home to an impressive lion population, including the descendants of famed Cecil the Lion. Along the mighty Zambezi River, Mana Pools National Park offers unparalleled expedition experiences, with days spent canoeing alongside hippos and evenings spent inside well-appointed tents listening to the sounds of nature (and animals!). A truly unique destination within Zimbabwe is Lake Kariba, the world’s largest man-made lake that showcases not only diverse Big Five wildlife but also majestic scenery bustling with serenity.
